I know how it is. You’re trying to build a successful business and maybe it’s not growing as fast as you notice everyone else’s businesses grow. You’re opting into everyone’s freebies, to the point that you’ve realized you have thirty free webinars, checklists, e-books and word docs in your inbox. You tell yourself you’ll get to them but we both know you won’t. Everyone seems to dish out the same advice over and over again in different mediums and if we’re all being honest, it gets to be pretty boring. So, I’ve taken it upon myself to come up with five business tips that you WON’T see everywhere else. And best of all, this won’t be another freebie sitting in your inbox ;)
End the Comparison Game
You know, comparing yourself to others and feeling bad that you don’t seem to match up. I think everyone has experienced this at least one time or another, right? Well, here’s the thing: comparing yourself to someone else is like comparing apples to oranges. The only similarity is that you’re both human.
It’s important to know that each person is on their own journey. Each person has experienced different things in their lives. And what it seems like on the outside is not always how it truly is. Comparing yourself to someone’s image is only going to make you feel bad about yourself and you deserve so much more than that.
Instead, accept your quirks, your uniqueness, and your badass-ness and use them to your advantage! Understand that there is NO ONE ELSE like you out in the world and that makes you incredible. When you fully understand how amazing you are, you will no longer even feel the need to compare yourself to others.
Throughout our journeys, we are all taught different ways to sell. Many are taught to cold call (contact) potential clients and customers, pitch them their services/products and hope for the best. While this may work for some people in certain industries, it doesn’t work for everyone. In fact, if you’re anything like me, it gives you an awful feeling in the pit of your stomach. But, to each their own. Like I said, it really works for some people.
I personally believe that the best way to get clients and customers is to provide value. Value, more value and then even more value. There is a myriad of ways to do this- maybe you start a podcast, create a blog, build up a Facebook Group, or post often on Instagram. No matter how you do it, make sure that you are sharing your knowledge and wisdom with your audience. Utilize your method of sharing value to convince your audience to like, know and to trust you.
Consider your purchasing habits and the brands from whom you purchase. You only purchase from brands and people you know, resonate with, trust will have good products/services and provide fantastic customer support, right? Now consider the ones that strive to give you more than just services and products. The ones that give things away for free, that strive to teach you, that donate to charities. My guess is that you probably love those ones the most. And it’s going to be the same for your clients.
This goes along with providing value. While you are providing value by whatever means you choose be it a podcast, facebook group, what have you, make sure that you are being yourself. I mean, this is probably the easiest strategy for you to take on because what’s easier than being yourself?
If you do, however, try to be someone you’re not, I promise that people will know almost immediately and they won’t like, know and trust you as much as they would otherwise. So just be yourself, speak as you normally would, use your quirky expressions and show your audience who you truly are.
And don’t be afraid to show vulnerability! If there is one thing that people can connect with it’s being vulnerable, struggling, and making mistakes. People want to hear your story, they want to know that you are just like them and that you have gone through and still go through what they are. So, don’t be afraid to express that side of yourself; people will love you for it.
Be a Treasure Hunter
This is one of my favorite pieces of advice. As your business starts to grow, you will have more and more people reaching out to you. Sometimes you will welcome it, and other times you will dread it. I get it, sometimes it can be overwhelming and can be seen as a ‘waste of time’ when you realize they’re not an ideal client.
However, I want to encourage you to look past the money signs and see the person for who they really are: a connection. Instead of not responding or being short with the person, understand that that person might be a great collaborator. That person could be a client two years down the road or might give you a referral. Or maybe, you just make that person’s day by talking to them and encouraging them.
Just make sure that you don’t immediately dismiss the person, because they will always remember how you treated them, and you might also be missing out on a great opportunity either now or in the future.
Delight your Clients/Customers
This one may seem obvious, but I don’t believe it’s always executed. Do you want raving reviews, amazing referrals from your clients, and high vibes every time you speak to your clients? Then you need to go above and beyond with them. Send them birthday cards. Send them freebies, articles you find, anything you find that pertains to them every once in awhile to let them know you’re thinking about them. Find ways to let them know they are special because they are!
By doing this you’re not only making your clients happy, you’re fostering a relationship with them that they will remember forever!
Now that have some unique ideas for your business, you will no longer need to opt into everyone’s freebies that will only tell you the same thing over and over again. Instead, you can start implementing these other ideas and see how your business grows and thrives!
