Running a business is stressful. There, I said it. There are a million things that we need to work on each day and somehow 24 hours doesn’t seem like enough time to get everything done. We work endlessly to improve, to uplevel our businesses and to get our names out there. We work on our mindset, yet the doubts still creep in.
When’s the next client going to come? How is rent going to get paid this month? How is my business going to uplevel from where I currently am? The relationship with my client isn’t working out as I hoped, what do I do?
I’ll say it again: Running a business is stressful.
I’ve found that setting aside scheduled time to do things to calm down, that help gain clarity, and that are actually enjoyable can reduce stress levels. That’s why I’ve come up with ten ways to practice self-love so that you can focus on yourself (for once) and not on your business and stresses.
Journal. Take some time to write down your feelings, the things you’re grateful for, WHATEVER is on your mind! You can find some prompts here.
Get cozy. Make some tea, grab a blanket, and read a book- whatever type of book you want. Maybe it’s your favorite ol’ dog-eared book you’ve read 50 times, maybe it’s that mystery novel you’ve been meaning to read, or maybe it’s a personal growth book that will help you better yourself. It doesn’t matter what it is, as long as it makes you feel good.
Take a bath. Use Epsom salts and essential oils. Use your favorite lotions and body scrubs- you know, the ones you save for special occasions. Indulge. This may seem more geared for women, but some men like baths too!
Exercise. Attend a yoga class, go for a run outside, or even walk to your local ice cream shop to grab a cone. Move your body and release some endorphins!
Do something that seems incredibly indulgent to you- maybe it’s a day at the spa, or maybe it’s a date with Netflix including grabbing your favorite comfort food (including dessert) and vegging out on the couch for a night.
This one may seem a bit crazy to some of you: TAKE A DAY OFF. Seriously. I know you want to work hard, but taking a day off for some ‘you’ time will do wonders for your mental state and you can get back at it the next day feeling refreshed and revived.
Turn on some of your favorite happy songs and dance to your heart’s content. No judgment here on your choice of dance moves (the robot and sprinkler are still cool, right?)! Dance until you can’t dance no more!
Take a nap. Guys, I'm going to let you in on a little secret: napping is literally how I got through college. How else can you stay up until 2 am at the bars, wake up at 7:30 am for class and manage to make it through the rest of the day?! Kidding! (kind of....I didn’t judge your dance moves!) But, it’s totally okay to catch up on some zzzzzz’s in the middle of the day! I bet you’ll wake up feeling more amazing than ever and will be ready to get right back to it!
Meditate. Find some peace within yourself and maybe even gain some clarity on some problems you’re trying to solve.
Go away for the weekend, even if it’s a 30-minute drive away. Stay somewhere new and explore! Be a tourist. Have fun. Let your clients know you’ll be unavailable or only available at certain times. Turn off your phone and forget about Facebook and Instagram and Pinterest for a little while! It’ll be there when you get back!
Remember, running a business is stressful and exhausting. I want you to know that it isn’t selfish to take some time off for yourself to keep you from burning out! You can easily implement at least one of these a week into your schedule, although I recommend more! And please note that this isn’t even an exhaustive list. What’s important is that you do whatever makes you feel best. So, take some time this week to try these out and see how it feels to be your best YOU!
